CV | Malcolm Utley
Malcolm Utley is originally from Sydney, Australia, and has a varied art practice encompassing Architecture, Film, Installations, Painting and Sculpture. He graduated with 1st Class Honours in Architecture from the University of Sydney in 1990. His interest in Philosophy, Cultural studies, and Art led to his production of honours texts: “The Architecture of Bawomataluo Village in Nias Indonesia” and “Power, knowledge and the body: a study of form and space inspired by Michel Foucault”. He was awarded the Elizabeth Munro Prize for design (Uni of Syd) and Ruskin Rowe Prize for history (Uni of Syd). After working with Alexander Tzannes Architects in Sydney, Utley pursued artwork through film and subsequently studied at the National Film School of the Czech Republic, in Prague. His short films have been shown at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and Flickerfest (Sydney). His practice in painting and sculpture was formalised upon his opening a studio in 1997 and completing a 3-year painting program at the Charlie Sheard painting school. In 2002 Utley travelled to Paris, France to work as assistant to the Australian painter Tim Maguire. Upon returning to Australia, he enjoyed a brief contract as a visiting artist teaching sculpture at 4 Aboriginal community schools in the central lands of South Australia. Utley was awarded the year long Rimbun Dahan Residency in Malaysia from April 2004. Utley was also awarded an Australia China Council artist residency in Beijing during June 2004. HeartSpace Art Charity Exhibition Adelaide.
Visited art scene in Los Angeles. Travelled on to South America and eventually returned to Australia, crossing the pacific by yacht. Commissioned work by Royal Bank of Scotland.
Showed new paintings and sculptures at Singapore Art Fair in October/November with Taksu Gallery. Returned to Kuala Lumpur 2006 and worked on new sculptures. Returned again in 2007 for 4 months to complete works of sculpture.
Trip to Thailand to supervise some bronze casting work.
