Hutchinson is accustomed to working in both abstract and figurative styles. His current work is not concerned with giving an accurate, matter-of-fact description of the world around him. Rather, he plays with the notion of the Australian landscape as a place of energy, mystery and vibrant colour. His series of large diptyches combine loose brush strokes and a refined technique with the result that the purely factual is juxtaposed with the lucidly abstract. There is a sense of the physicality of landforms; at once ambiguous and ordered. His works on paper, in general, take a more playful tack. Many done ‘en pleine air’, they capture the Australian bush with freshness and spontaneity that resonates with a strongly felt sense of life.
Hutchinson has exhibited annually since 1999 and is represented in many corporate and private collections throughout Australia.
