Artist’s Statement

acquaterra’  refers to the relationship between water and land; both are inexorably linked. One surrounds the other, sculpts its form, nourishes its vegetation, adds life and colour. As a landscape painter I’m constantly reminded and excited by this link. This work explores the diversity of our environment. It is based on travels from the east coast of Australia, where water abounds, to the dry chasms and dusty creek beds of the Flinders Ranges, where water exerts its power because of its scarcity. In the depiction of rising swells on rocky promontories and arid landscapes scarred with signatures that rarely flow, I seek to establish some confirmation of place through a sense of order within the environment and on the canvas.
