Artist's Statement / Still Life and Sea | Sophie Haythornthwaite

These works represent my return to exhibiting after several years of full-time motherhood.

I have been inspired by the landscape of the Pittwater area, and also by the beautiful coastal scenery of Tasmania. The flowers and fruit I have painted have been chosen for their rich colours and sculptural shapes. I have enjoyed creating compositions that combine these elements with the distinctive headlands and beaches of the Australian coast.

I hope these works emit a sense of serenity and optimism, the chaos and angst that is the other side of life will no doubt surface eventually in future exhibitions!
